Brain death is clinically diagnosed by verification of the absence of brain stem reflexes, motor responses, and the ventilatory drive.1 In some circumstances, ancillary tests are necessary to confirm the diagnosis of brain death, especially when there is uncertainty about the reliability of parts of the neurologic examination or when an apnea test cannot be performed.
